Knowledge of Musical History & Cultural Heritage


Level I

At the conclusion of Level I, beginning band students shall be able to:

A) Perform music of a variety of styles and periods of composition:
While studying short exerpts of the following composers students will become familiar with their melodies:
J. S. Bach Dvorak Mozart
Beethoven Handel Rossini
Brahms Haydn Sousa
Tchaikovsky Verdi

B) Perform music of different cultures and religions:
African Chinese Hawaiian
American Folk Czech Irish
Australian English Jamacian
Korean Scottish Christmas/Hanakkah

C) Listen to full orchestral and/or concert band recordings of various composers or cultural influences to gain knowledge of repertoire.

D) Demonstrate self-confidence, discipline and accepted performance decorum.

Level II

At the conclusion of Level II, middle school band students shall be able to:

A) Perform music of a variety of styles and periods of composition:
While studying short exerpts of the following composers students will become familiar with their melodies:
J.S. Bach Dvorak Joplin
Beethoven Grieg Mendellsohn
Bizet Handel Mozart
Rimsky-Korsakov Schubert Sousa

B) Perform music of different cultures and religions:
American Folk English Italian
Arabic French Canadian
Mexican

C) Perform the National Anthems of the following countries:
Australia Canada
Great Britain United States

D) Listen to full orchestral and/or concert band recordings of various composers or cultural influences to gain knowledge of repertoire.

E) Demonstrate self-confidence, discipline and accepted performance decorum.

Level III

At the conclusion of Level III, proficient high school band students shall be able to:

A) Demonstrate basic understandings of various musical style periods by completing worksheets and class activity projects that detail elements of the following periods:
Renaissance (1400 - 1600) Classical (1750 - 1820)
Baroque (1600 - 1750) Romantic (1820 - 1900)
20th Century (1900 - Present)

B) Listen to full orchestral and/or concert band recordings of various composers or cultural influences to gain knowledge of repertoire.

C) Demonstrate self-confidence, discipline and accepted performance decorum.

D) Listen to and perform various styles of music associated with that of at least two of the following eras of American Jazz History:

Ragtime BeBop
Early New Orleans Style Jazz Cool Jazz
Big Band Swing Modern Jazz
Avante Garde

E) Perform music of a variety of styles and periods of composition:
While studying short musical exerpts within, Standard of Excellence Book III, students will become familiar famous melodies of the following composers and the period of music history that is associated with each:

Renaissance (1400 - 1600)
Palestrina Susato
Morley
Baroque (1600 - 1750)
Purcell Couperin
Vivaldi J.S. Bach
Handel Telemann
Classical (1750 - 1820)
Mozart Haydn

Level IV

At the conclusion of Level IV, advanced high school band students shall be able to:

A) Demonstrate moderate understandings of various musical style periods by completing worksheets and class activity projects that detail elements of the following periods:
Renaissance (1400 - 1600) Classical (1750 - 1820)
Baroque (1600 - 1750) Romantic (1820 - 1900)
20th Century (1900 - Present)

B) Listen to full orchestral and/or concert band recordings of various composers or cultural influences to gain knowledge of repertoire.

C) Demonstrate self-confidence, discipline and accepted performance decorum.

D) Listen to and perform various styles of music associated with that of at least four of the following eras of American Jazz History:

Ragtime BeBop
Early New Orleans Style Jazz Cool Jazz
Big Band Swing Modern Jazz
Avante Garde

E) Perform and/or conduct music of a variety of styles and periods of composition:
While the class is studying short musical exerpts within, Standard of Excellence Book III, advanced high school students may demonstrate understandings of famous melodies of the following composers and the period of music history that is associated with each composer through conducting small or large ensembles during in-school rehearsal(s).
